Student Testimonial: Dr Carol Mastropierro

When it comes to choosing which aesthetic medicine training course is right for you, sometimes it really does take an insider’s perspective to give you the insight you’re looking for. Hearing from someone who has been in your shoes – with all the same queries and concerns – then took the leap, can be so helpful.

Dr Carol Mastropierro is a truly international injector. Born in Italy, she qualified as a doctor and gained a junior clinical fellowship in dermatology in Bulgaria before completing her Level 7 Diploma in Botox and Dermal Fillers with Harley Academy in London, UK.

She is now having one-to-one mentoring sessions with our clinical trainers to build her skills and confidence as a solo aesthetics practitioner. We asked her to give us her honest opinions and advice on becoming #HarleyTrained…

How did you become interested in medical aesthetics?

Since my fifth year at university I have been very interested in dermatology and skin health. Because of this, I got closer and closer to the world of aesthetics. I was fascinated and by the time I finished uni, I decided aesthetics was my path.

What made you decide to do your Level 7 Diploma with Harley Academy?

My research started and I came across Harley Academy (HA). I attended the open evening and enrolled on the combined Level 7 and Cosmetic Dermatology course soon after. I put a lot of thought into which aesthetics course I was going to join. HA’s Level 7 is well-known and recognised all over the country. Harley Academy seemed like a place where I would find like-minded people, as from the treatments they were performing I could see outcomes I would like to provide.

What drew you to aesthetic medicine?

I saw in aesthetics a different side of medicine, one that is not taught in schools. I was always fascinated by the psychology behind beauty, understanding what people find attractive, how behaviour is affected by the way you believe you look and the way other people perceive you.

“I am now in my third week of practicing on my own and I don’t think I would have had the confidence I have if it wasn’t for the mentoring.”

How are you finding your one-to-one injectables mentoring?

I have loved every single one of my mentoring sessions! Personally, I like to switch mentors each session. I think it gives me the chance to experience different ways of doing the same procedure. It gives me different points of view and helps me develop my own style and ideals of beauty. I like to collect as much advice, tricks and techniques as possible, then pick and choose what works for me. I hope to be as skilled and amazing as my mentors one day!

What effect has being mentored had on your aesthetics practice?

I am now in my third week of practicing on my own and I don’t think I would have had the confidence I have if it wasn’t for the mentoring. Receiving praise and validation from my mentors, getting feedback and advice was paramount for me to feel that I could do something good on my own.

What advice would you give medical injectors considering aesthetics mentoring?

I would definitely recommend making the best you can out of your mentoring. Ask as much as possible and pay attention to every single detail.
