Perioral Rejuvenation treatments and injection techniques

Perioral rejuvenation is becoming increasingly popular. Patients are beginning to understand that there are options beyond lip filler!

Whether your patients require an individual treatment, or a more rounded treatment plan, you have plenty to choose from! These range from soft fillers for smoker’s lines and botox for expressional concerns, to chemical peels for collagen production and skin texture.

If you’re looking to provide outstanding results for the lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth, read on for our expert advice!

Here are some of the perioral rejuvenation techniques most commonly used by new aesthetics practitioners...

PERIORAL FILLER INJECTION TECHNIQUES

For these areas, filler properties need to account for the local anatomy. They also need to be suited to the volume replacement required and the dynamic activity of the region. Fillers with a range of crosslinked products, such as Juvéderm Vycross – Volite, Volbella and Volift – are often used in the perioral area.

It’s important to note that the injection technique used should be based upon on the following points...

  • Your competence
  • The patient’s specific concerns
  • Local anatomy
  • The type of filler used.

Linear threading

This technique involves injecting small amounts of filler in the right layer, using a needle or cannula in a linear fashion. Usually this is a retrograde track, as filler is placed while the needle or cannula is withdrawn. The goal is to create a smooth surface and reduce the appearance of the lines and folds.

Fan technique

In this technique, the filler is injected in a fan-shaped pattern from one entry point. This is to create a more natural-looking result over a large area.

Microdroplet technique

The microdroplet technique involves injecting small droplets of filler at the desired depth in the treatment area. This technique allows for precision, for example, when managing specific perioral lines.

Upper lip vermillion border treatment

This involves creating a subtle lift of the upper lip to reduce the appearance of perioral lines. You would typically deposit tiny amounts of a soft filler into the vermilion border of the upper lip using a superficial linear threading injecting technique.

SKIN TREATMENTS FOR PERIORAL REJUVENATION

Chemical peels

Skin peels involve the application of a chemical solution to remove the outer layers and stimulate collagen production. A medium or deep peel can help reduce the appearance of perioral lines and improve skin texture.

Skin boosters

These injectable skin treatments use hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, to hydrate and plump the skin. When injected into the skin, skin boosters can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, including perioral lines.

Skin boosters are often used to treat the entire face, including the perioral area, to provide an overall rejuvenation effect. The treatment involves a series of small injections using a fine needle or cannula, which are placed just below the skin’s surface. The injections help to hydrate and plump the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving the skin’s overall quality and texture.

Microneedling

A minimally invasive treatment that involves using a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process and collagen production, which can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling can be used in specific Fitzpatrick skin types. This combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. It stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture whilst also tackling skin laxity.

Laser resurfacing

This non-invasive option uses lasers to heat and stimulate collagen production in the skin. It can help reduce the appearance of perioral lines and improve skin texture. Training for this type of treatment is generally provided by the device manufacturer.

LEARNING PERIORAL REJUVENATION TECHNIQUES

Entry level aesthetics training courses for healthcare professionals

If you’re a doctor, dentist, nurse or midwife looking to get started in aesthetic medicine, you’ll learn about the basics of perioral filler techniques during our Foundation or Core Training in Botox & Dermal Fillers.

Additionally, for skin treatments, our Cosmetic Dermatology Foundation course will introduce you to the fundamentals. This includes microneedling, skin boosters and chemical peels. If you wish, you can then step-up your knowledge and practical training with our full Cosmetic Dermatology course.

Perioral & Lip Filler Masterclass

A new option for intermediate level injectors is our Perioral & Lip Filler Masterclass. This boutique learning solution allows you to really focus on regional filler and toxin treatments. It includes dedicated eLearning to complete before a day of theory, observed treatment demonstrations and hands-on, mentored injecting.

This small-group training option provides a fantastic opportunity to hone your lip filler skills and learn about perioral rejuvenation techniques, including discussing additional approaches such as the toxin-based Lip Flip.

Level 7 Diploma in Botox & Dermal Fillers

We vastly expand upon perioral rejuvenation treatments in our Master’s level qualification, the Level 7 Diploma in Botox & Dermal Fillers. This was the first, and remains the only Ofqual-regulated postgraduate qualification of its kind in aesthetic medicine.

The Level 7 can also be purchased as a combined option. This includes our full Cosmetic Dermatology course in addition to the complete Level 7 Diploma course.

By learning both skin and injectable treatment techniques, you’ll be able to offer patients a complete facial aesthetics service. You’ll learn about improving your patient’s skin texture and dealing with concerns such as hyperpigmentation, which can then provide a better canvas for injectable treatments.

Should you wish to sell skincare products, being able to provide skin assessment and treatment plan services can also provide a valuable additional revenue stream outside of your injecting work.

Again, these courses are only available to licensed doctors, dentists, nurses and midwives.
