Lip Filler: How To Prevent Bruising

Lip Filler: How To Prevent Bruising

Lip filler is one of the most popular treatments among new aesthetics practitioners.

Students must first learn the theory involved in lip augmentation, including anatomy, proportions and injection techniques. However, many are eager to get to the practical stage.

When you treat a patient, in addition to bearing in mind your eLearning and practical mannequin training, you also need to ensure their comfort. This applies during the treatment and afterwards, by learning how to prevent bruising from lip filler.

Overcoming Common Lip Filler Issues

HOW TO PREVENT BRUISING FROM LIP FILLER

Below, cosmetic nurse prescriber Shantel Noble, shares her tips on how to prevent bruising from lip filler.

Shantel is a Harley Academy clinical trainer, aesthetics expert with her own practice and a Level 7 Diploma graduate. She has also completed a V300 prescribing course.

Use the correct tools for lip fillers

  • In addition to being safer, using a cannula will always minimise bruising. The reason for this is that you’ll only have one injection point bilaterally at the oral commissure. Conversely, you have multiple injection sites throughout the lip when using a needle.
  • Your needle should be of the appropriate gauge of 30g, ideally.

Injection techniques that minimise lip filler bruising

  • A delicate approach with a needle with a slow, controlled entry can minimise trauma.
  • Plan your injections and refrain from adjusting your needle position too much (tenting or repositioning) once you are within the lip body (layer 2).
  • Ensure smooth transitions in between fanning, if you are using a fanning technique. Retrograde your needle right back to the entry point before fanning to a new direction.
  • Fanning can also assist in minimising injections.
  • Withdrawing slowly out of the lip again minimises trauma.
  • Retrograde linear threads or bolusing within the body of the lip are less traumatic than constant vertical threads (tenting). This can, therefore, help to prevent or minimise bruising.

Follow good post-lip filler treatment protocols

  • Ice can be applied post treatment to assist with any bruising, ensuring there is sterility.
  • If the patient has any discomfort following their lip filler procedure, advise them to take paracetamol for pain management. This is recommended in place of any anticoagulants or anti platelets, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, unless already prescribed.
  • Remind your patient to refrain from drinking alcohol pre and post procedure as it is a vasodilator. This means it can thin the blood which contributes heavily to bruising.
