Almost every new aesthetics practitioner is scared of bruising their patients; it’s a common and rational fear.
Whilst understandable, it’s not something that should throw you off your stride. Bruising can happen, even to experienced injectors. What’s important is knowing how to minimise this risk.

TOP TIPS FOR PREVENTING BRUISING FROM BOTOX
Be superficial with your injections
Dr Marcus Mehta, co-founder of STORY Clinics and Comma, aesthetic medicine expert and director at Harley Academy:
“When injecting around the eyes in particular, the key for me is to be really superficial. You want to be leaving visible bumps/blebs in the skin. Doing this and having really good light should help you to prevent bruising.”
Use Invisible needles

Assess for superficial vessels

“Make the patient aware that when you inject, you’re assessing for superficial vessels. On occasion these vessels are not visible and this increases the risk of bruising. Whilst patient awareness and consent do not prevent bruising in themselves, they are vital in managing the situation.”
Provide appropriate advice to patients
Dr Harriet Jenkins, experienced aesthetics specialist at STORY Marylebone and Rachel Staggs Clinic, plus senior trainer and clinical lead at Harley Academy and The Academy Clinic:
“The role of patient communication, both before and after injectables appointments, shouldn’t be overlooked. Use pre- and post-appointment communications to set out key preparatory and aftercare information. These can be delivered verbally, via email, text or WhatsApp, for example. In relation to preventing bruising, remind your patients to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after their appointment. Additionally, note that they should not take ibuprofen or aspirin for 24 hours after having botox for the same reason.”

As with most things, practice is the best way to perfect your approach to botulinum toxin treatments. The more refined your technique, the better your chance of preventing bruising.
